When I was seven, an important event happened in my family, which changed our whole life. I clearly remember that my Dad came into my room, woke me up and said that he had to take my Mom to hospital and I had to go with him. We went together and then I remember long hours of waiting. It seemed to me that we had been sitting there for ages. One moment I fell asleep, but soon the door opened and a good-looking woman with a kind face invited us to come in the room. There was my Mom with a little bundle in her arms. She waved me to come closer and there was my younger brother.
The day he was born was one of the most important moments in my life. Strange enough, but I did not feel jealous, I felt happy and I knew I had to protect and take care of him. Unfortunately, when he was five, we discovered that he really needed our help, as my brother was diagnosed with epilepsy. Now he is twelve and he is facing serious problems at school. He is a gifted boy, who has a unique talent for writing and a wonderful ear for music. However, he is constantly bullied at school and suffers a lot.
And this is the reason I have chosen psychology as my future occupation. I know I will not be able to help him conquer his disease, but I am sure I will be able to help him overcome the emotional and psychological challenges of being different. There are hundreds of people in the world who need a helping hand and a person who is happy to lead them along the road to eliminate their fears. I hope I will be able to help at least some of them.
