English for Everyone
English has already been an international language for many years, and it has proven that this status wasn’t awarded to it without a reason. Thousands of people learn it as their second language, and many choose it as their main specialty. The main reason of people’s desire to master English is the wealth of opportunities it provides to them. Some of them I will describe in this paper.
Bill Gates is a person who requires no introduction; yet, it is far less known that, in addition to his activities as a programmer and a businessman, he has also wrote several books, one of them, The Road Ahead, published in 1995, was a kind of summary of his thoughts and predictions concerning the further evolution of technology, mostly, of course, the digital one.
I wouldn’t say that 21 Grams by Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu has changed my life, for I doubt that such a thing can be said about any work of art, but at least, it made me think about it for quite some time and, although it has been several years since I watched it, I still remember the plot vividly, as well as the general impression it had upon me – that of very sad and very disturbed brilliancy.
To the majority of people C.S. Lewis is known only as a personal friend of J.R.R. Tolkien and the author of the Chronicles of Narnia; however, he was also a prolific theologian, Christian apologist, essayist and even a science fiction author. This science fiction of his is what I am going to talk here.
Horror stories seem to be very popular nowadays; however, the majority of both film directors and writers don’t seem to grasp the idea that the quality described by a vague word “disturbing” is much more important for stories of this kind than graphical depiction of blood and gore.
Ayn Rand’s works, mostly Atlas Shrugged and The Fountainhead are considered by many American readers to be among the most important things they have ever read. I won’t disagree with this idea, although in the area of understanding one’s way in life I would give the preference to The Fountainhead.
