Importance of Self-Respect
My severest judge is myself – that is the phrase that a lot of successful people use in order to explain how they have managed to achieve what they have achieved. It is also a very good principle to follow for everyone, for it is hard to overestimate the importance of self-respect and self-esteem in any enterprise one may face in his or her life.
If you have once and for all decided that you are going to achieve something and understand that you are going to work really hard at it for a really long period of time, it is very useful to know that there is no one in the whole world who will help you and make you move on when you want nothing but stop and have a little rest – either in direct or figurative sense. You have to decide what is beneath you and respect yourself too much to lower to something you know you are going to despise yourself for afterwards.
Self-respect is very important in communication with other people, for, even if you are afraid of some conversation or some very important person you have to talk to, only the knowledge of your own worth may help you overcome this fear and behave like a man and not like a terror-stricken slave.
It may be hard to create this feeling in yourself after years of being told to be humble and silent (especially during the childhood), but, if you are going to do something real in your life, there is no other way to start. Feel yourself a human being, know that it is something no one can take away from you – and live on.
