Relationship Between the Leader and His Followers
Leader as an entity cannot be closed in itself – it is, first of all, about the interconnection between the leader and his followers. There are, of course, various kinds of leadership, and they presuppose existence of certain models of behavior, but some things remain more or less the same no matter what.
One of the first things that make effective leader is the ability to delegate responsibility. If the leader always tends to do everything by himself, it will lead to two consequences: first, he simply won’t have time to do everything he needs; second, very soon his followers will start feeling that he either doesn’t trust them or considers them to be incompetent, which is equally bad.
Another important moment is to recognize the successes of the followers and not concentrate attention on their failures. If somebody does something good, the leader shouldn’t take it in his stride, but pay some attention and praise the follower, at least slightly. If somebody makes a mistake, no matter how serious it is, the leader shouldn’t concentrate attention on it, but instead should always give the one responsible a possibility to save his face – he will be grateful for this in future.
Of course, if it is clear that diplomatic methods like these are not enough to improve a follower, it is better to get rid of him altogether. If a person is incompetent and does not want to study, there is nothing he may be useful for.
All in all, leadership is a complicated system, and to success in it one has to take into account a lot of aspects – like the above described ones.

The answer to this question is very simple – there is no answer, for the sheer reason that there is no universal formula for becoming a good leader. There are methods and techniques that can be used only by a certain kind of people – if you have a low and squeaky voice, you will hardly be able to inflame the audience with a rabble-rousing oratory.
There are certain kinds of people that can only be influenced in certain ways – some will only understand who the boss is if you are rude and unceremonious, the others may be either frightened or become dissatisfied with you if you try it with them. Every situation calls for a specific decision; try to work out a universal strategy and you are sure to lose.
Thus, the main quality of a leader is to understand people, their motives, their wishes and fears, their psychological types, what will encourage, frighten, break and make this or that person indignant. Only if you can do all of this you may be called a leader.

No matter what an excellent leader you are, you cannot be excellent in every area of action and knowledge you encounter; or you may simply do not have enough time to manage to do everything. In these cases you will need somebody who is proficient in a given sphere and whom you may trust – the choice and the ability to attract such people is another indispensable quality of a good leader.
It is, of course, not everything, but these points I consider to be the most crucial.

Leaders have existed and have been important at all periods of time, but only in modern period did people start to treat this problem methodically and scientifically. I do not mean that leadership education is pointless. Yes, you can train a good leader even out of a person who has no specific abilities in this sphere, but he will never be an excellent leader. It is the same as it is with writers, artists, composers and so on. Some people can learn to do something. Some just can’t.
Learning Without Assessment
The most desirable dream of any student is learning without any marks and grades and preferably without any assessment at all. An ideal educational process! Imagine that you as a student do not have to learn, sit exams and prepare for your classes. You are free to choose if you really want to learn this or that topic or you are sure you will live happily without it. Sounds really impressive!
However, the perfect picture definitely has its drawbacks. It is a part of the human nature to feel the need to be praised, recognized and positively evaluated especially by those people whom we respect and trust. That is why ideally teachers should become for their students a means of self-evaluation of the skills and knowledge acquired in the process of learning. It can help to develop an award-winning learning strategy and facilitate the future professional development of the student. If there is no assessment, there are also no guidelines of where to go and what to do on the way of acquiring new knowledge. So, doesn’t it mean that any student needs assessment?
In my opinion, assessment is vital for successful education. However, the assessment procedures must be changed considerably. Unfortunately, in many universities and colleges they are more aimed at frightening students and guiding them through the difficulties of the learning process. If you fail your exam, you lose an opportunity to learn further. It seems to be effective, but in reality it is not, as the only result of such conditions will be the fact that students try to cram as much knowledge into their heads as possible before the exam, relying on their short-term memory, get a positive result and forget everything they have learnt right after they have received grades.

In the ages past, the world of every single human being, with rare exceptions, has been limited to a town he lived in, and some space around it. Everything beside it has been unknown, unknowable and almost mythical.
Today it is hard even to imagine such a situation. The world has grown smaller – much smaller, and not only in the sense that everyone who wishes can get into the opposite point of the globe in the matter of not even days, but hours. The real change has happened because of all the new methods of communications that changed the face of the world forever and entirely. The main achievement is that there is no longer need for getting in this opposite point of the globe. I can get all the necessary information, images, books, music and so on without even leaving my house, just like any person having an access to the Internet.
The free flow of information, the ability to immediately find the answer to any question (in the past you would have to visit a library in order to do it), the possibility of contacting everyone at any time of night and day – these are the true benefits that scientific and technical revolution has brought to us.
And, one of the most important things – the Internet makes the possibility of the state to control information almost impossible. Of course, there are and will be restrictions in certain countries, but people find new ways of evading them all the time, so the Internet is the first complete guarantee of the freedom of speech that has ever existed in this world.
Can Reason be the Only Prerequisite for a Moral Decision?
“It isn’t logical, but I feel it is right”. How often have we heard this phrase – in life, in films, read it in fiction books, and it is always considered to be automatically correct, because it is so appealing for an average man to have his feelings proclaimed as the most exact indicator of morality, with all this cold and boring logic discarded as inhuman and evil. But, ironically, how much logic there is in this?
If a person’s feelings were always the best way to determine what is morally right, all people would have felt in the same way about everything. I am not speaking about fundamental principles now – we all understand that premeditated murder is bad, but what about killing somebody in self-defense? The opinions will differ. Some will say that a man has no right to kill a man under any circumstances. Others will say that the one who starts violence deserves to receive retaliation. These conclusions can be drawn both from logic and from feelings; but there is no definite answer that people’s feelings would have always given when asked.
Reason may give different answers as well, but reason, at least, shows us the whole line of thought which lead to a conclusion, and this conclusion doesn’t just appear out of the thin air. One can agree to reason or argue with it on its own ground, by its own methods, giving other arguments and so on. Feelings can only be met with other feelings; two people who feel differently cannot interact unless they use reason to prove their points – but being based on feelings, they are unprovable. Thus, the only viable method of making a decision is through reason.
Is Competition Beneficial in Education?
All the educational paradigms can be roughly subdivided into the ones that presuppose competition among the students and the ones that propose mutual support. These two ideas are, naturally, opposed to each other, for they differ even in the idea of necessary manning of an average class. Competitive methods suggest that all the members of the class should be of more or less the same intellectual level, proficiency in disciplines and so on. Mutual support system believes that every class should be compiled of students belonging to all levels, with clever students helping the less promising ones to progress and so on. Which of them is correct?
The fact is, it always seemed so obvious for me that I never managed to understand how anybody may believe in the latter idea at all. If we have one slow-witted student in a class, no matter how many geniuses there are apart from him – all of them will have to slow down and wait until the material they got after the first explanation is stuffed into his head. But in this case they at least can ignore him. If there is one clever student and a wide range of others, the study becomes a torture for him. Mutual support? I guarantee that he will hate all those who make him slow down.
The only way to make it sure the students progress quickly and smoothly is to make it possible for them to compete. When there is a constant danger of somebody becoming better than you, you have to hone your skills incessantly. When you don’t have to make any efforts to be better than all the rest – what is the motivation for studying further?
Being a Part of the Corporate Culture
Today’s business environment is the world of multinational corporations, which are characterized by a huge staff with different mentality and national backgrounds. What unites them and keeps them together is the corporate culture, a set of rules created by the management of the company to promote the values, important for the successful development of the business. The idea of working for a company with a developed corporate culture seems good and relaxing: you always know what to do and how to behave as you are made aware of the rules at numerous training events.
However, in reality working as a part of a big staff is challenging and demanding. There are a lot of people, who you have to adapt to. They all have their individual characters, but you have to learn to cooperate to be able to work in a team. Following several simple rules can help considerably:
- Always be honest about your skills and qualifications! Telling something untrue can spoil your reputation for ever, as the tasks are set according to the abilities of the workers involved in completion. So, if you lie, the team will rely upon you to perform the task, which you actually cannot do.
- Follow the unwritten rules! The proverb says: when in Rome, do as the Romans do. Do not try to impose your ideas about the way the communication must be structured, but spend first several weeks studying how the things work in your company.
- Be friendly, but keep the balance! Try to find the happy medium in communication with your colleagues. On the one hand, do not avoid social events, as they will help you to know people better, on the other hand, do not try to make close friends in the office.
These simple rules are sure to make your work experience in a big corporation much easier and more pleasant.
When I Know They Are Lying to Me
I often feel embarrassed and the reason is not the fact that I do something stupid. On the contrary, I try to be sensible and understanding, but the problem is that I know when people are lying to me. I often wish I would not, but I do. I can never explain how it works: it is some gut instinct and it is triggered when somebody is trying to tell me tall tales. My anti-liar system detects phoney and a huge red bulb together with the wailing alarm sound goes in my head “Lie! Lie! Lie!”
It has been a problem for me for many years and I have learnt it the hard way that if you do not behave in a proper way, you can suffer from a communication breakdown. Here are the methods I use when I know people are lying to me.
- Evaluate the lie: if it cannot affect you, take it as a figure of speech, an artistic method and oratory means like a hyperbole. If you feel that the lie can either influence your life, or it irritates you, thus increasing the stress level, go to the next stage.
- In case the lie is aggressive, do not try to argue and make the liar confess it has all been made up. Vice versa, try to pretend you believe every single word, as this is something that the liar wants.
- Finally, if the previous method does not work, use the most lethal weapon. Phoney the liar up! Say the most extraordinary and strange things; lie a lot and about everything. The liar feels that you can be dangerous for his reputation and will leave you in peace.
These methods proved really effective for me, which is why I recommend trying them to everyone.
